Abstract

This article is a survey of the broad field of bibliographical control of linguistic scholarship in the Indo‐European languages, although some titles described here are also pertinent for non‐Indo‐European languages. Improvement of bibliographies in this field as well as desiderata are noted. Special attention is given to the characteristics of existing or needed bibliographies which will permit computerization; but the need for scholarly insight in planning and supervising the compilation of bibliographies is also emphasized. Major works such as the Linguistic Bibliography and the MLA International Bibliography are reviewed in some detail; and the linguistic bibliographies of individual Indo‐European languages, ranging from the rather extensive literature on Germanic and Romance languages to areas with smaller circles of interest such as the Celtic languages, also receive appropriate attention. Bibliographical coverage of both descriptive and historical linguistics is noted. The survey indicates duplication of effort in certain fields and suggests the need for co‐operative effort.

Abstract

After the European War came to an end it became apparent that there were literally hundreds of thousands of scientific research documents which had been written both by Allied and by Axis scientists but which had never been generally circulated due to their confidential character. On 12 June 1945 President Harry Truman issued an executive order charging the Office of the Publication Board, U.S. Department of Commerce, with dissemination of this information.

Abstract

AS part of its three year research programme to draw up a code of practice and standards for the planning, organisation and lay‐out of metropolitan city libraries, the International Association of Metropolitan City Libraries (INTAMEL) met in Gothenburg in April 1969 to consider research studies and papers prepared during the previous year and to examine technically new city library developments and, later, in Stockholm and Copenhagen.

Abstract

THE activity of librarianship during September was almost breathless. Visitors to Chaucer House in the third week of the month had possibly the most cosmopolitan experience of their lives. It was, as our readers know, the assembly time of the International Federation of Librarians, which divided its London meetings between Chaucer House and the equally hospitable University College. The members, coming from a score or more of countries east and west, had, many of them, been present at the successful and crowded conference of Aslib at Ashorne, and were now conferring further, and being entertained by the Library Association, together with members of the Unesco Library School. That school spent its first week in Manchester, with a tour of Derby County libraries; its second week was in London. Amongst the guests at the reception given by the British Council at Portland Place, and at the L.A's own reception at Chaucer House three days later, many distinguished librarians were met, including Dr. Munthe, Dr. Sevensma, Dr. Ranganathan, the state librarian of Ankara, the University Librarians of Istanbul, Copenhagen, Trondhjem, of Alexandria; and many others, including those of England and Scotland, the Chief Keeper of the Printed Books, Bodley's Librarian, and the Librarian of the National Central Library. Moreover, as these gatherings coincided with the meeting of the Library Association Council, the official leaders of the profession were present, including the President (Mr. Nowell).

Abstract

THE traditional division of information services into science and technology on the one hand and the humanities on the other, does nothing to improve the provision of information in a multi‐disciplinary subject such as planning. The proposal to make separate provision, within the national framework, for the social sciences, which was put forward by J. E. Pemberton in the November issue of this journal, would only serve to further fragment the sources of information in planning.
